MuleSoft Migration Service

Are you ready to embrace an API-led connectivity platform that empowers your Digital Transformation?

Migration from a Legacy Platform to MuleSoft

To migrate or not to migrate?

A decision around moving from one integration suite to another is always difficult and has both cost and risk associated with it. A lot of organisations, especially those with mature SOA and a complex legacy landscape, delay or never follow through with this decision because of the amount of effort involved. The challenge here is that you might compound the problem further and increase technical debt by solving issues with technology and solutions not fit for the business needs, all while the rate of change within organisations is growing at an ever expanding pace.

Others on the contrary, rush into the decision to migrate from a legacy middleware technology vendor to a modern hybrid connectivity platform in order to address the deficiency and immediate needs – improve scalability, increase robustness, reduce technical debt and IT systems maintenance effort. This in itself creates its own challenges, as without a clear view of the systems, you can quickly end up replicating many of the same issues upon a new platform, as the underlying systems require assessment and their long term strategy should be considered as part of the solution.

The above are the two extremes, but in both cases, we at Ricston recommend taking a step back to identify what your business objectives are, determine whether the architecture you have in place is supporting these objectives, and if not – how would you re-imagine your IT landscape if you were to start building it as a greenfield project.

A strategic decision

In our experience, migration is typically just the first step to enabling a broader digital transformation vision. It encompasses not only hybrid connectivity between Cloud, SaaS and on-premise systems, but a federated agile delivery and a new operating model that supports creation and reuse of digital capabilities and assets (APIs) for sustainable growth.

The top 3 strategic reasons to consider when moving away from a legacy middleware technology are:

  • Capability to participate in the API economy, both internally and externally.
  • Leverage public or private cloud deployment, including containerisation (e.g. docker) and combine with on-premise capabilities for true hybrid connectivity solutions.
  • Replatform legacy integration capabilities to a more modern solution and take advantage of agile DevOps delivery.

Another thing to consider is that migration does not need to happen throughout an organisation if it doesn’t make economical sense. Very often the main drivers of the process are specific departments, such as Sales and Marketing, New Product Development or Finance departments where implementing a new API-driven middleware technology would result in the highest ROI. Once a new platform is up and running and your IT department starts generating more and more reusable assets – that’s a good point to start evaluating the migration of other building blocks in your IT landscape. Eventually you may decide to fully migrate to a new platform, or opt for a multi-platform architecture.

That is why any new system you adopt must also be adaptable and cater not only for your current, but future state requirements, given the proliferation of cloud technology and API’s.

At Ricston, we believe that MuleSoft’s Anypoint Platform is uniquely positioned to address all of the above requirements and that is why it’s the number one iPaaS we look to when working on transformation projects with our clients.
