Achieving the Vision Through API-led Connectivity

Air Malta set a vision to become a leading carrier connecting the islands to important regions in Europe and across the Mediterranean and embarked on a digital transformation journey to support its growth strategy that places customer and customer experience at its core.

After a rigorous process of selecting the right tooling for the digital transformation, the airline chose Salesforce as their Customer Relationship Management tool (CRM) and MuleSoft’s Anypoint Platform as a middleware and API platform of choice.

MuleSoft’s Anypoint Platform is a crucial component of the complex technical landscape, allowing Air Malta to unlock legacy systems of the traditional airline industry and ensure seamless connectivity with multiple Air Malta native and third-party applications and SaaS across a hybrid landscape.

Being a delivery partner of MuleSoft, Ricston provides thought leadership, platform architecture and design for the airline, as well as developing integration solutions and supporting the airline’s internal IT team.

The first results of the transformation are quite significant, with the new CRM system and internal integrations a “search & book” process has been streamlined, providing the airline’s contact centre with visibility of each passenger’s interaction with the airline and enabling agents to provide instant support.

Air Malta is now also able to expose flight itineraries, routes and tickets availability in a governed and controlled manner to third parties, and the first airline to take advantage of this system is Ryanair.

The airline has also improved the quality of bookings and is able to better tune ticket pricing with Lufthansa Revenue Integrity tooling integrated into their internal systems.

With the new IT system, Air Malta took control over its data and has built a platform, giving access to its services to third parties.
